5 Healthy Drinks You’ve Never Heard Of

April 6, 2011 By Philip

Taking the steps to get rid of your bad drinking habits can be hard – especially in the beginning. There is nothing quite like soda in the world. There is nothing that quite has that perfect taste and there is also nothing that can be so unhealthy for you. Soda in moderation is one thing, but it’s when you are drinking soda everyday that it becomes a problem. Try these 5 exotic types of drinks that are extremely healthy substitutes!

Kefir

This drink is just beginning to become popular (when I say popular I mean known to the health gurus) in the U.S.A. It is originally from Russia and people have been drinking it there since the ancient times. It is a tart, yogurt-like beverage that is made from fermented milk.

This drink helps to boost the immune system, help fight off disease, and improve overall health. It is customary for people in Russia that are admitted in the hospital to drink kefir. What makes it so healthy is that its rich with beneficial bacteria (probiotics) that produce beneficial enzymes. These enzymes aid digestion and promote healthy flora in the digestive tract.

Kavass

Kavass is another drink from Russia that has been around since the ancient times. It is also fermented, but it is made from stale dark, sourdough rye bread instead of milk. This is a popular summer-time drink that has a tang to it.

It also produces beneficial bacteria that promote digestion and may destroy disease-causing microbes in your intestine. It is also very rich in B vitamins and is thought to relieve intestinal problems and hangovers.

White Tea

Everybody has heard of green tea and mint tea – two drinks that are high in antioxidants and are wildly famous for being healthy, but what about the less talked about and exotic white tea?

There are four main varieties of white tea, listed beginning with the highest quality. Aihao Yinzen (Silver Needle), Bai Mudan (White Peony), Shu Mei (Long Life Eyebrow), and Gong Mei (Tribute Eyebrow) are the primary white tea varieties. All of them are extremely high in antioxidants and flavanoids. Flavanoids are strong antioxidants help fight off free radicals and inhibit cancerous cell growth. White tea also decreases bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol.

Monavie Acai

Acai juice is made from the pulp of the Acai. This species of fruit is native to Central and South America and is used in all sorts of juice blends. A study performed at the University of Florida showed that acai antioxidants could induce more rapid death (apoptosis) of leukemia cells in vitro. The Monavie Active drink is formulated with the most pure and potent form of acai available and was formulated not only to protect your body from cancer causing free radicals, but to improve joint mobility as well.

Cabbage Juice

A great source of Vitamin U, cabbage juice is not known for its taste, but rather for its spectacular ulcer healing powers. It has anti-inflammatory qualities and many studies have been done that have proven it’s ulcer healing capabilities. In fact, most people, with even the worst of ulcers, can be healed from drinking one quart of cabbage juice for 7-10 days. To make it taste a little bit better, people usually do half and half with celery or carrots (you have to juice it).
