Caffeine is a drug – a typically harmless drug, but a drug none the less. Caffeine acts as a stimulant and can change the body’s heart rate and improve mood and energy. Some cases say that caffeine is beneficial in correct dosages – 200 to 300 milligrams, or two to four cups of coffee a day – helping protect the body from potential diseases and some forms of cancer.
It is, however, not that difficult to overdose on caffeine intake and end up with caffeine poisoning. The key is to know your own body and what you are putting into it. Be careful of energy drinks and large cups of coffee that have over (or close to) the recommended amount of caffeine in one drink.
