Treatments for Whiplash Injuries

February 29, 2012 By Smith

Whiplash injuries relate to the injury of the neck and the backbone, which usually occurs after the body is exposed to a sudden impact. This sudden impact could be due to a car crash or suddenly diving into a pool of water. The sudden deceleration caused due to any of the mentioned events can lead to the neck or vertebrae being injured.

Whiplash injury is very painful and can continue for months. Therefore, those who have suffered from whiplash injuries should look for an effective treatment method, which can provide them with long term relief.

While there are drugs and several other methods of treating whiplash injuries, they do not provide complete healing, and tend to only alleviate the symptoms. They also can have side effects, which lead to other types of problems. Therefore, holistic treatment methods are better suited to treat whiplash injuries, as they help in restoring the physical and psychological well being of the person, naturally.

Some alternative treatment methods for whiplash injuries include; reflexology, chiropractic treatment, massages therapy, osteopathy and physiotherapy. The strategy to treat whiplash injuries is to keep the injured joint or soft tissue mobile so that stiffness is prevented. The mobilization of the joint also helps in pushing the nervous system to function effectively, which, in turn, will ease pain.

Whiplash injuries can be improved by a healthy and nutritious diet. Therefore, the help of a nutritionist too can be taken. The nutritionist would advice you to eat foods such as oats, green vegetables, nuts and sunflower seeds to provide vitamins, magnesium and fatty acids.

Additionally, certain herbal remedies help in reducing the tension of the muscles, thereby easing the pain in a whiplash injury. Herbal medicines such as tinctures, medicinal oils and certain supplements can help the whiplash injury symptoms.

Brisbane physiotherapists recommend taking the help of physiotherapy as an effective method of treating whiplash injuries. Centres for physiotherapy in Brisbane offer specialized services for treating whiplash injuries. They advise and explain the nature of the injury and recommend treatment that can be followed in order to reduce the symptoms and ease pain.

After analyzing the injured area, the Brisbane physiotherapists recommend the practice of certain exercises that can help in improving the range of movement of the neck. They massage the neck, shoulder and the upper thoracic region, bringing relaxation and comfort to the patient. Other than this, Brisbane physiotherapists also teach postural awareness to limit the aggravation of the symptoms. Therefore, if you are suffering from whiplash injuries, you simply need to consult centres for physiotherapy in Brisbane.

TMJ (Temporomandibular joint disorder)

February 28, 2012 By onedentalclinic

Temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ for short, is when the tempormandibular joint (jaw joint), has an acute or chronic inflammation, causing the sufferer to experience:

  • Pain in the neck and shoulders
  • Headaches
  • Biting or chewing discomfort
  • Earache
  • Jaw clicking
  • Pain and tenderness in the jaw

Teeth Disorder

Tooth pain/problems are a common occurrence with the TMJ disorder. During everyday life, there will be a variety of different pressures and forces on your teeth which can all contribute to developing TMJ. For example, if you lost one of your permanent teeth and did not replace it with a dental implant, crown, bridge etc, the forces in your jaw would change and the surrounding teeth would start to move towards the newly created gap – which in its own right will cause a number of problems:

  • Teeth will start to look crooked and wonky
  • Bone around the tooth will start to recede
  • Affects the way the jaw closes

The changes in movements and pressure in your mouth have been proven to further increase the chance of the TMJ dysfunction.

What options are available for addressing TMJ?

TMJ can be an extremely uncomfortable condition for someone to have, causing a lot of pain and discomfort. Unfortunately there are no medicines that can cure or prevent TMJ, but there are various exercises and treatments you can do:

  • Braces can control the pressures in your mouth, as well as addressing your cross/over bite
  • Stretching the muscles can greatly relieve the pain

Fortunately, the pain of TMJ can be reduced by either visiting your dentist, doctors and even chiropractors, who will be in a good position to examine you and give you the most relevant information and help. If you believe you are suffering from any of the symptoms it is recommended to visit one of your health professionals – The earlier a condition is identified, the better the chance of a quick treatment and recovery.

A Look at Some Methods for Treating Back Pain

February 27, 2012 By FrankWalker

There are many treatments for back pain and, when you are suffering from a backache, it can sometimes be confusing which treatment to choose. Severe back pain can be treated with a prescription from your doctor, and there are over-the-counter medications that may help, as well. However, your health care provider may recommend that you undergo surgery. A majority of people who suffer backaches and back pain can treat themselves with the many choices of self-treatment that promote healing that are available today.

Acupuncture is an alternative treatment that has become a lot more accepted in recent years. Back pain is something that is sometimes hard to manage, and acupuncture has proven that it can manage back pain very effectively and is thus recommended to do so. The system of acupuncture works by stimulating energy points on your body. This is actually discovered and utilized in China thousands of years ago. The only drawback to this particular system is that it uses needles which are placed into your skin which many people cannot deal with. There is no pain involved, just a moderate tingling sensation as the needles are inserted. Most of the time, you can locate a qualified practitioner in your area that can help you.

One of the more innovative ways to heal your own body is by using what is called the Alexander Technique which teaches you how to move in harmonious ways. By having proper posture, your spine will be straight and you will feel better. Back problems can actually be averted once you learn how to walk and stand in a more natural manner, something that the Alexander Technique shows you.

Long-term health is important, especially when considering your spine and the way that you’re back will feel later on in life. More than likely, there is an Alexander Technique practitioner in your area. If there is not, you should be able to find one or at least watch some videos online.

A lot of people haven’t heard of a great natural remedy called capsaicin cream. It’s one of the better creams for pain relief. If you have ever eaten chili peppers, than you have experienced capsaicin. It is the active ingredient that makes peppers hot. When this cream is applied to your back, you can feel the heat the same way you experience the hotness of chili peppers on your tongue when you eat a spicy food. The “burning” sensation you get when this cream is applied isn’t unpleasant, and it is this “heat” that helps relieve and heal your back pain. Since it might be unpleasant on your hands, make sure you wear disposable gloves when you use capsaicin cream. And don’t get it in your eyes. Capsaicin cream – which is a natural substance – can often bring you more relief than the topical creams from the pharmacy. You’ll find capsaicin cream is readily available online, at the drug store, pharmacy, or even a whole foods store.

In order to get your back feeling better than ever, it will usually be a combination of a lifestyle change, a medical prescription, and visiting a physical therapist. Finding a treatment that works best for you may take a little bit of time, but through trial and error, you should be able to get back pain relief soon.

So let’s see, you have an IM business, have been trying to use Lower back pain as much as possible but have not yet experience wild success. That is something we hear all the time. That is exactly why it pays to discover the real truth about Lower back pain and then learn how to use it, properly. 5 Tips to Prevent or Cure Dry and Chapped Skin over the Winter

February 24, 2012 By Angela

So Christmas is out of the way and although the nights are slowly starting to draw back in, we are officially in the middle of the winter months. This means we still have a good amount of rain, wind, cold and maybe even snow to deal with before we can ditch all the layers and thick coats!

One thing many people are prone to at this colder time of year is chapped lips and dry skin. The low humidity in the air causes skin to dry out; whilst the high winds and rain pounding against us roughs and damages the surface.

The following five tips are easy to carry out, fit gently into your daily routine and, depending on how much you are willing to spend, don’t have to cost you more than a pound or two for lip treatment items at your local chemist! Read on to find out more…

Take your products with you everywhere!

Many cosmetics such as facial moisturizers get used once in the morning and once in the evening then left on the bathroom shelf for the rest of the day. This isn’t unusual as most women aren’t going to smear their make up 3 times a day to apply more!

Our lips are different as they take more of a pounding during the day as eating, drinking, talking and even breathing means specs, spots, crumbs and substances, good and bad, are constantly joining and leaving the surface area. The flexibility of our oral muscles also means skin is strained and worked a lot harder than areas like the skin on our forehead as an example. This can encourage dry skin to crack and cause pain as well as look unhealthy.

Carrying lip balms and healers to apply as regularly as needed will help keep your lips in supply of good supplements and provide a thin layer to protect bare skin from the wind and the cold.

Avoid Make Up!

Many women wear make up on a day to day basis, let alone when a problem needs covering up such as a spot or the dry skin currently in question.

In the short term make up may help it look better, but you’re actually filling what is essentially a type of skin wound with chemicals and covering the area to prevent it from breathing and healing.

If you are going to use make up or lip stick to hide damaged skin, try to use hydrating products that use natural ingredients. A good way to do this is simply read the back; if you struggle to pronounce certain words, do not know what said ingredient is or just see a list of numbers and compounds it’s probably best to avoid it.

You may want to go as far to include your lip treatment cosmetics in this list too. Just choose natural oils or organic products instead!

Don’t pick at it!

Much like a spot or any wound, picking at it is undoing all the hard work your body has done to fix the problem naturally! It may look hideous, be sore or just something you can’t help but poke way at but it’s there for a reason. Picking it off is only going to mean the area is going to have to heal again and makes the process last longer along with the visible damage.

Not only this, but you could end up with a nasty scar too.

Exfoliate!

Much like the rest of your skin benefits from cleaning off dead skin cells for the pores to breath, your lips are exactly the same. All the chap sticks and moisturising balms we apply during the winter months can gradually block the pores overtime and prevent any of the benefit of said products, not allowing any of the goodness to penetrate the skin deeper.

It’s easy to forget to clean your lips too, with soap not tasting so great it’s not really an area we bear in mind to give a good scrub. Using a wash cloth or soft/babies toothbrush soaked only with warm water in a circular motion every evening is a great way to exfoliate and clean your lips thoroughly.

Keep wrapped up!

And the final tip is common sense for anyone braving the cold weather! A scarf or high collar jacket zipped/buttoned up all the way will keep your lips warm and minimise exposure to windy, wet and harsh conditions.
