Get Tested: It’s Easier Than You Think

March 7, 2013 By Angela

Happy couple

If you think you might have a sexually transmitted disease, or even if you’ve just never been tested before and have had sex, it’s important to get yourself tested. If you’re infected, you could spread the disease to other people without even knowing it.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of STDs are sores or bumps around the genitals, which could be a sign of Herpes, as well as dark, smelly, or painful urination or a secretion or discharge, which indicates a possible Chlamydia or Gonorrhea infection. Spots appearing on your body could mean you’ve entered the second stage of Syphilis. If you have any of these symptoms, it’s important to see a doctor and/or get tested immediately.

Just because you don’t have symptoms, though, doesn’t mean you’re STD-free. STDs often don’t have any symptoms at first, and some signs of a sexually transmitted disease aren’t obvious. If you’ve had sex with someone who wasn’t a virgin, you could have an STD and should get tested to be sure you’re healthy.

Blood Tests vs. Urine Tests

If you have outward signs of a disease, the doctor should be able to tell rather quickly what you have, or they can swab the infected area to find out. If you don’t have any symptoms and want to get tested to be sure you’re healthy, you’ll test through blood and urine for the various likely STDs. Blood tests and urine tests check for different diseases, so it’s important to know what you’re being tested for before you assume that one negative test indicates that you’re disease-free. Urine tests can tell you whether or not you have Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Herpes 1 or 2, Trichomoniasis, or Hepatitis B or C. If you want to check for HIV or Syphilis, you’ll need to get a blood test. It’s good to get tested once or twice a year.

Condoments

Common Procedures

If you go to your doctor to get tested, you can discuss any possible symptoms and let him or her know of any occurrences that may make you more likely to have an infection, and can get swab testing if you have blisters or bumps that indicate an STD. If you want to get tested quickly, cheaply, and privately, there are plenty of testing centers you can go to. These testing centers will find out what STDs you want to check for, take blood and urine samples, and then will send those samples to a lab to be tested. Depending on the lab, you will usually know within five days, but sometimes as few as two. They may call or email you your results.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases can be dangerous, and if you don’t know you have them, can be spread to others. It’s important to get yourself tested on a regular basis to ensure that you don’t have an untreated disease harming you and being passed to your partner. Even condoms aren’t 100% effective against STDs (though they do lower risk dramatically). If you’ve had sexual intercourse, make the smart, safe choice to get tested.

Sue L. McBride writes for public health blogs. If you’re sexually active, make sure to get regular std tests. Make sure to visit std testing centers in san diego.

Five Codes Nurses Live By

March 6, 2013 By Angela

nurse

Any profession has a set of rules that its employees live by. These codes give employees a set of guidelines by which they can perform their jobs to the best of their ability. The field of nursing is no different. There is a developed code of ethics that each nurse must agree to follow. This code includes:

1.Rights

Throughout history, patients weren’t guaranteed much in the way of rights. That changed, officially, in 1973, when the American Hospital Association passed the Patient’s Bill of Rights. These rights were revised in 1992 and continue to be followed today. Your patients are required to be informed of their rights each time they are admitted to the hospital. If you fail to notify your patients of these rights, you will be in violation of federal law.

2.Autonomy

Your patients must be, when possible, given the right to assist in their own healthcare. This means that no procedure can be performed without informed consent. Your patient must understand the need for the procedure, how it will be performed and the desired outcome. The decisions that your patients make, based upon their own religious or moral beliefs, must be followed, whether or not you agree with those decisions. For example, some religions reject the administration of blood that is foreign to their body. If you don’t respect these wishes, and supply your patient with blood, you can, and most likely will, lose your license.

3.Beneficence and Nonmaleficence

As a nurse, you agree to do good, not harm, to your patients. This is the definition of beneficence. You also agree to prevent intentional harm, or nonmaleficence. As a nurse, you will be responsible for reporting any illegal, unsafe or unethical practices as conducted by any person. When you make a decision for your patient, in adherence to the patient’s stated wishes, you must weigh the potential benefit of your patient against any potential harm.

4.Justice

In the field of nursing, all people are treated equally. This means that no matter the budget you are given, you may not give special treatment to one group over another. For instance, if you have a soft spot in your heart for children, you are not permitted to offer these young people better care than you would to the elderly. Likewise, you must treat people equally, no matter socio-economic status, culture, race, gender or sexual orientation.

5.Fidelity

You’ve heard the term fidelity as it results to marriage; it’s a concept that relates to commitment. Fidelity, in the field of nursing, means that you accept accountability for your actions. You understand that you are responsible to yourself, your facility, society, the government and your patients. Nurses must be committed to providing the best possible care, at all times, while remaining accountable for the decisions that they make and the actions they take.

As a nurse, you will live by a code. These rules, as it were, will come into play, whether consciously or not, each time that you make a decision for patient care. While they may seem cumbersome when you first enter the field, these rules will help you perform your duties in a consistent, ethical way each time you clock in for your shift.

Eryn Greene is an avid blogger. If you’d like an advanced career in nursing, apply for an advanced degree in nursing such as the msn offered at the University of San Francisco or Georgetown University.
