Raising Awareness About Breast Cancer

By Jason Leave a Comment

With breast cancer being the most common cancer in the UK, you’d assume just about everyone knows about its symptoms and the kinds of treatments available out there. However, this isn’t necessarily the case, which is why dozens of organizations – not to mention thousands of Britons – spend their time raising awareness about the deadly disease.

Often it’s not until someone you know is diagnosed with breast cancer that you really stop to think about how prevalent it is and how it has the power to change lives – if not take them.

If you have been personally affected, or perhaps know of someone else that has had experience of breast cancer, then perhaps you too might feel it’s time you helped raise awareness of the condition.

If so, then the following kinds of activities are a great way to kick off your campaign:

Community support group

Many cancer survivors, or those recently diagnosed, start or join community support groups to let people know that they’re not alone in their battle. These can take place in the local community centre, village hall or in a nearby health practice.

It’s only by talking about the disease and sharing personal experiences that people can find the strength to go on sometimes – or find hope.

Website

Creating a website is a great way to get your awareness message out to tens, hundreds, thousands or even millions of people all at once. The ubiquity of the internet means that many more people can access your site than perhaps visit a community meeting. It’s also a place where people can find comfort anonymously.

Beneficially you can also put in links to other information or organizations, such as details about how radiotherapy for breast cancer might impact on a lifestyle… and so on.

Fundraising day

Organizing fun-days to celebrate those who have beaten cancer is also a great way of showing things are possible, whilst also raising funds for certain charities or general awareness in the community.
