Austin Air Healthmate Plus Detailed Filter Review

May 3, 2013 By Steven Kirchhof

We had put up a video earlier about the Austin Air Healthmate, and received some questions on the filter itself. In this video I remove the filter from the unit and describe it’s construction and how it can help solve your air quality issues.

Hey, everybody. A short time back, we did a quick overview or review of the Austin Healthmate Plus Jr. Unit. Of course, it’s very similar to the full size Healthmate unit. This one here handles about 700 square feet. The full size Healthmate handles about 1500 square feet. We’re using this, because it fits on the table better. We did get a lot of question about what’s the filter like inside of that thing, so we thought that certainly we should do another video to show what the filter actually looks like inside of the unit. Let’s go down this. I’m going to try to gracefully get the filter out on video.

Basically, you just turn the unit over, and I have already done this. There’s four screws on the back. I already took them out. The bottom panel pops off and out comes the filter. There you go. What we’re trying to say in the last video is this air purifier is truly an air purifier. Much different than the type of units that you’ll get at a discount store or at a general that, yes it might be significantly less expensive than this unit, but if you just have a media in there which is basically like a paper or cloth where the manufacturer just sprayed it with carbon. Then, they put up there that it’s carbon filter, not really a carbon filter like this.

The Healthmate and Healthmate Plus, which is this unit, it has four levels of filtration. First, it has this media in here which is, I would say, little bit less than a quarter inch thick. That’s the media. As the air goes in there, that’s really just to take out the big things; air, big pet dander, that sort of thing. Then, within this filter it has … the next stage of filtration will get out the bigger chunks like pollen and that sort of large chunks, but not as big as dog hair that will already be out. The third level of filtration is six and a half pounds of activated charcoal. That’s quite a bit of activated charcoal, and it’s the Austin Air specialized blend of charcoal.

Following that, there’s a pleated HEPA filtration filter inside of there, so you’re getting true HEPA. This, of course as I said, is a Jr. unit, so you get six and a half pounds of activated charcoal. With the fill size Austin Air unit, you get 15 pounds of activated charcoal. That’s it. That’s the filter for the Austin Air Healthmate Plus. If you have any questions, certainly let us know. Remember at Better Health Innovations, you can try this thing out. Try one of these units out for a full 90 days. If you don’t like it, you can just send it back. Austin Air also warranties their filters for five years, which is pretty much unheard of in the air purifier industry. As always, everybody have a great day.

Better Health Solution: Austin Air Purifiers

February 4, 2013 By Steven Kirchhof

In this video I do a fairly quick run through of an Austin Air Healthmate Junior. In this review I demonstrate the unit. Usually in our videos we remove background noise, but I did not want to mess with the audio because of the sound demonstration, which I believe accurately reflects noise level of the machine. Listen closely and you can hear a clock behind the camera ticking!

TRANSCRIPT
Hi everybody. You know air quality or poor air quality and air pollution whether it be manmade pollution or natural pollutants in the air can really wreak havoc with your health. A lot of people out there suffer from allergies, suffer from asthma, have a poor breathing function, have trouble sleeping at night. I wanted to talk a little bit today about one of the solutions that we provide at betterhealthinnovations.com and that’s the Austin Air Healthmate. This is actually a Healthmate Junior. I grabbed a small one off the shelf so that we could take a look at it, put this right on the table. It’s a little bit more manageable.

The Austin Air Healthmate. I just want to go over the basic operation with you, talk a little bit about how it works, why it’s effective. I’ll turn it on in just a second here and you can listen for yourself as to the sound that this unit makes.

First off, what I like about Austin Air is that it’s a real air purifier. A lot of times you’ll go into some of these large discount stores and they’ll sell a small air purifier unit. It’ll cost 50 bucks or so. That might be fine for a really, really small space without a heck of a lot of allergens in it, but a lot of times these small units just don’t have the different levels of filtration to be effective. They also don’t have enough of the filtration media. The Healthmate here, or the Healthmate Junior and the same with its bigger brother; it just has a bigger housing, bigger case, bigger motor. The Healthmate has a large filter of activated carbon. Carbon has been used for thousands of years to get rid of smells. Certainly taking the air in your environment and bringing that through that activated carbon will take out the vast majority of smells and get rid of the small particulate matter as well. All Austin Air are HEPA-grade, medical HEPA-grade filtration. They do that through several stages and that’s how the filter in the median side is actually made up.

The operation of it, this is basically sucking in air from all sides. One of the biggest problems of getting an air purifier and making it actually work in your home is getting the air to the air purifier so that it can do its job. It depends on your room layout. It depends on how the air circulates through that. You are helping yourself out with a unit that’s pulling it in from all four sides. If you open up this unit and look inside, you’ll see the big giant filter, and you’ll see that it’s bringing in the air from all sides basically going up through the four-stage filtration and out through an output port here. The filter is six-and-a-half pounds of carbon. It’s warranted by Austin Air for five years. I’m not sure really if anybody else does that. It is a prorated warranty. If you wear it out quicker than that and you don’t come back you don’t get a free filter. If it wears out after two years then you get most of your money back, that sort of thing. I know that working with the Austin Air folks for a number of years that they’re very good about any issues that customers have. They’re a very customer-focused organization as is Better Health Innovations. In fact, we’ve had such good success in selling these units the standard return policy for this is 30 days, which is what Austin Air advertises and 30-day, no questions asked. You get all your money back. Betterhealthinnovations.com, we’ve actually extended that to 90 days because we have found so few people who have not found benefit from a high-quality air purifier such as this that we’re comfortable, “Hey, try it out for three months and if it’s working for you, great, then keep the unit. If not give us a call and we will arrange to take it back.” You do have to pay to ship it back to us. Please keep the original box until you’re sure that you like it. Other than that you get back anything that you paid us. We don’t have a restocking fee all the way up to 90 days.

Operation of the unit. I’m going to turn this on. It’s a little bit difficult on video to demonstrate how loud a sound is. This has three-setting fan motor in it. When you click it on, it goes right to the highest setting. I’m going to click it right over to the lowest and give you an idea how loud this is. On video you probably don’t hear a heck of a lot. Now on this lowest setting, which you’ll probably have it set on the first or second setting for most of the time. If you imagine having this in say a bedroom, it’d make kind of a light noise in the background. I really think with other background noises in your home you would really have a hard time hearing this on the first setting. What a lot of folks do is they’ll crank the thing up on high during the day and when they go to bed, then they’ll turn it down. Similarly if it’s in your living room, say if you’re trying to get rid of tobacco smoke or some sort of pet odors or whatever in your living room, it doesn’t make really a loud, objectionable noise, especially on the lower setting. Let’s crank this up to number two. Now we’ve got a nice airflow coming out through here. You probably hear that on video. I hope you do. Again, it’s not objectionable. If this was in my bedroom I would be okay with this noise. I’d be fine with that. It would be a background, kind of sleeping noise.

The highest setting, I’ll crank it up here. I’m not going to talk much on the highest setting. The highest setting is pretty loud. That highest, that last setting, it is fairly loud. Some folks might get used to that. I think it would be loud to have that going in your room all the time. When I first started using an air purifier, what I did was I stuck it in a room and for 24 hours I kept it cranked all the way up. I closed the doors, closed the windows and cranked that all the way up. That gave the air purifier the opportunity to clear out all the existing air in there. Then I put it all the way on the lowest setting. It’s pretty much just maintenance, just sucking the air in at a much lower volume, sucking the air and it’s going to remain the same.

I’m sure you’re going to have a lot of questions. I didn’t want to bore anybody on video about technical specifications of this. Visit us at betterhealthinnovations.com. We have a lot of information about Austin Air. We carry several other brands as well. Give us a visit over there. We’re planning on some more air pollution solution videos so please subscribe to the channel. If this video is useful, please like it of course. If you have any questions absolutely give us a call. Put a comment in the section below if you’d like. Until later, everybody have a great day.
