Can Pau D’Arco Fight Bacteria?

October 11, 2011 By Angela

We live in a world that has so many advancements and have improved so many things to make our lives better and easier but one thing will always be the same and that is our daily battles against bacteria. We all know about bacteria fighting medications, over the counter drugs and the ones that need prescription. Sometimes though we just need to try other treatments that may be as effective but not as harmful in terms of side effects to our bodies and in a way, we will need to make sure that we also know our enemy. So more to that point, we should have a quick reference as to what bacteria really is and how it is able to be harmful to our body so we will be able to understand more how natural remedies like pau d’arco can help.

Bacteria

Bacterium if it is only one and it seldom is that is why we commonly refer to it as bacteria, is a tiny living organism also known to be microorganisms which are neither plants or animals and they belong to a group all to themselves. They are single celled microorganisms and like most microorganism they are microscopic and commonly only a few micrometres in length and exists in the millions. To give you an idea of how abundant bacteria is all around us and which is why we need to be more vigilant in fighting it, about a gram of soil contains over 40 million bacteria in it. A millilitre of fresh water could possibly hold a minimum amount of close to a million bacteria. Scientists even claims that the earth is composed of mostly bacteria in terms of its biomass.

Its origins according to some studies date back 4 billion years ago. As pathogens they can be deadly, they are the cause of some of the most deadly diseases the world has ever seen. Epidemics that were caused by smallpox and malaria are among those that were caused by bacteria and only when antibiotics were found that it seemed we had a chance against it. Just to give you an idea as to how dangerous it can be to be targeted by pathogens, statistics show that in the 1900’s the leading causes of death in America are caused by bacteria and only when proper immunization and sanitation agencies were installed that the death toll decreased dramatically.

Why Pau D’Arco and Bacteria?

The origins of pau D’arco is from its extraction from the inner bark of the Taheebo tree and is commonly found in the southern regions of the Americas and has recently been occasionally found in Florida. Pau D’Arco has a long history of medicinal properties which dates back from the times of the Incas and Aztecs in Central America. It also has an amazing antibacterial property. The key on how it is able to do this is because of a chemical that is found in abundance in it which is called naphthoquinones which have been found to be possibly what gives Pau D’Arco its strong antibacterial effects.
