Work It Out: Home Gym Decor Essentials

October 26, 2012 By Angela

If having to get yourself to the gym prevents you from working out as much as you would like to, you may want to consider building your own gym at home. By building a home gym you are in control of what equipment you have. If a home gym helps you actually get the workouts that you need and want, then the efforts are worth every penny.
Light
Light is a must in any home gym. In fact, HGTV states that not only do you need to have ample artificial lighting, but natural lighting can provide many benefits as well. If your windows provide you with a nice view of nature, they can be even more motivating. However, you may want to consider installing roller shades on your windows. Roller shades allow you to have privacy if you want it, yet you can easily let in the natural light.
Flooring
While rubber floors are usually the go-to option for home gyms, they do not offer many options if you wanted to create a room with more warmth and versatility to it. Instead, opt for putting carpet over the rubber floor. That way you will get the best of both worlds.
Colors
When deciding on the color you want to paint your walls, you need to decide what your main purpose of the room is. Houzz suggests that if you will be doing mainly cardio and weight training you should opt for orange, gold or neon walls to create energy in the room. However, if you will be using the room for yoga and meditation-infused exercises, blue and green are better options due to their soothing effects.

Liven Up The Space

Whatever color you decide to paint the walls, you should also add additional pops of bright color throughout the room to liven it up. You can do this by choosing brightly colored exercise balls and mats. You can even add color by painting your storage cabinet. Keeping the room lively will make you feel happy and motivate you to spend more time at your home gym.
You don’t want to spend your time staring at blank walls while you’re working out, so hang up pictures that motivate you. These can be slogans that empower you or images that portray your body goals.

Mirrors

Mirrors are another good way to decorate your home gym that motivate you and allow you to see if you are maintaining the proper positions for your exercises. Elle Décor suggests that you use framed mirrors instead of the common frameless ones. Framed mirrors will add depth and warmness to your home gym to make it an inviting atmosphere.

Air Circulation

Keeping the air circulating in a home gym is important to reduce stuffiness and air moisture. It keeps the room cool and helps you breathe better, which is essential for an effective workout. Ceiling fans are an ideal way to optimize air circulation, but setting up floor fans around the room can be effective too.

Cost Efficient

You may think that creating a home gym is going to cost you an arm and a leg, but that does not have to be the case. There are many places to find slightly-used equipment that will still get you the same results without costing you too much. You can even ask your friends and family if they have anything they are willing to part with for your home gym.

Cancel your gym membership! Create your own gym today

We all try to eat healthily and exercise, but sometimes it can be such a chore! Some people love going to the gym to work out, but for others it can be embarrassing, expensive or just plain boring. Having to pay out each month and travel to find a gym can put many people off, but there is a solution – make your own gym at home!

While this sounds like an expensive solution, you don’t have to fork out lots of cash to get everything you need. Many items can be bought or even built very cheaply, and it’s surprising the amount of gym equipment you won’t need anyway.

The first step to building your own fitness paradise is finding the space for a gym; this may be the hardest step, as many people simply don’t have the room. I for one have an unused conservatory which provides enough room for weights and various pieces of fitness equipment, but not everyone has unused rooms in their house! Consider using the garage or shed, especially if they have windows and are fairly spacious. Log cabins are an excellent place to set up a home gym, so you could consider investing in a shed or log cabin to get started.

Next you need to think about your fitness needs – are you looking to build muscle, increase your cardio fitness, or both? If you’re planning on just working on muscle training, you’ll find it far easier to gather up equipment. Free weights are fairly cheap and easy to come by, so find out where you can get some decent quality weights and a bench. All the fancy muscle training equipment at the gym is pretty unnecessary, and many fitness enthusiasts believe they can actually hinder progress and cause injuries. Whatever your opinion, you can easily do without adding these to your collection, so don’t worry about them.

You’ll also need to invest in some foam mats, for body-weight exercises such as crunches and press-ups, and some resistance bands to work different muscle groups. Exercise balls can be good for core exercises, or even just bouncing around on when you’re bored!

If you’re more interested in cardio, or want to mix up your workouts, you’ll need to make sure the space you’ve chosen is wired up so you have electricity. If you’re not an electrician, get someone else to do this for you! You want to avoid all the hard work until you’re actually in the gym.

Once you’ve got this sorted, you need to go on the hunt for some cheap fitness equipment. Exercise bikes and treadmills can be surprisingly cheap. Elliptical/cross trainers are a bit more expensive, but well worth investing in, especially if you have any joint problems.

Once you’ve got your equipment set up, you can add luxuries like a mini-fridge for snacks and drinks, or even a TV to keep you entertained whilst you’re working out. Make sure to stock up on towels and water, and get some anti-slip mats to make sure there are no nasty accidents – then you’re ready to go!

You can avoid all this and just go running and biking instead, but then you wouldn’t really be reading this article in the first place! Remember, whatever you spend now is likely to be half of what you’d spend on a gym membership.

How To Find The Motivation You Need to Get In Shape and Stick With Your Workout

January 16, 2011 By Steven Kirchhof

When you are considering a new piece of workout equipment, do you first consider how well you will be able to hang clothes on it? Elliptical machine… excellent. Rowing machine…. not so much. Rebounder… not a chance. Well, the answer is “of course not!” We all start a new fitness routine or purchase a new piece of fitness equipment with all the best intentions of hitting it hard several times a week, but how often do you see a $500 exercise bike covered with this week’s laundry? Probably too often. The problem becomes one of [Read more…]
