If you follow natural health, healing, and medicine, you have surely heard of the battle being waged over the use of Genetically Modified Organisms in our food supply. At the center of this argument are companies such as Monsanto, Dupont, Coca-Cola, Pepsico, independant news outlets like Natural News, non-profit organizations, and activists like Ronnie Cummins.
On one hand, GMOs have enabled us to feed the worlds ever growing population by developing plants in the laboratory to be resistant to herbicides, improve drought tolerance, and more. On the other hand, long term health effects of GMOs is largely unstudied before they received approval and one recent study indicates that GMOs rapidly caused cancer in lab rats.
The debate has been recently heating up in the past few weeks with Russia banning GM corn imports and France proposing an EU ban. In the United States, voters in the State of Californa will soon be considering Proposition 37 which, if passed, will require GMO labelling. Right now, the California proposition is expected to pass with 61% of voters supporting the measure and only 25% opposing. However, special interests are funnelling millions of dollars into advertising against Prop 37. “Their upcoming avalanche of attack ads will try to scare voters into believing food costs will go up if Proposition 37 passes, using bogus figures from bogus ‘studies’ funded by their own campaign,” explained Gary Ruskin, campaign manager for YES on 37.
