I was in my dorm, studying, when one of my roommates ran up to me and started asking to show me something. She said, “Look, look at my eye!! Do you see how it twitches?? I started to laugh, because her eye was indeed twitching. I always thought that it was something that happened to someone that was really angry, or someone that was crazy. My roommate was neither.
We started to look for reasons why her eye was twitching. We even started asking around. And it seemed that a lot of college students had begun to suffer from the eye twitch.
We found that there are 5 main reasons why people’s eyes twitch.
1) Exhaustion
This may be the number one reason for college students. Many college students do not get the right amount of sleep that they need. Many are out partying, socializing, and doing assignments that are due the next morning. Taking a day off and catching up on sleep may be a good idea for people whose eyes are twitching.
2) Stress
People’s bodies react in many different ways to stress. Some people may want to sleep more, but some other’s eyes may start to twitch. This may be due to social activities, school work, or even family problems. If you are able to identify the source of stress, you may able to stop your eye from twitching.
3) Eye Strain
For college students, this may be a very prevalent stress that we are put under. College students stare at computer screen for many hours a day. Students use computers and laptops for school work, social activities and entertainment. This causes a lot of strain on the eyes. This is a result because looking at the computer screen is very different than actually reading printed text. It causes the eyes to strain, and possibly cause twitching.
4) Caffeine and Alcohol
Many medical experts think that twitching is a result of drinking too much alcohol. With the many parties that college students attend, cutting back on the alcohol may be a good idea.Consuming so much caffeine because of the many late-nights may not be such a good idea after all.
5) Nutritional Imbalances
Eye twitching can be a result of eating poorly. Because a college student’s diet consists of mac and cheese, this could very well be a problem. Try going green for a little bit. Eat an apple for lunch, and cut back on the carbs.
It all comes down to taking care of yourself. If you notice that your eye has started to twitch, do not panic. Most of the time, when your eye suddenly begins to twitch, it does not mean that there is something terribly wrong with you. It just means that your body is giving you a warning sign. A warning sign that it is not able to keep up with the demands that you are giving it, that it needs to take a break and slow down.
