Why women need health supplements?

December 8, 2012 By melisalissa05

To answer the above question we must first realize what health supplements are. Health supplements, also known as dietary supplements, are widely used for the purpose of improving health. Health supplements come in the form of capsules, softgels, tablets and liquids and can include various vitamins and minerals like calcium, iron and magnesium. There are herbal supplements also available in the market like Echinacea and Guarana.

People consuming health supplements must be aware that they are not medicines which treat or cure any kind of illness; they only contain ingredients from natural sources.

Why we need health supplements?

A healthy and well-balanced diet normally provides us with all nutrients. When the diet is not well-balanced, these health supplements play a vital role. Some people consume little or no fruits, green vegetables or dairy products, so they get a deficiency of vitamins and minerals. Health supplements, including multivitamins are readily available in today’s marketplace and help to address this problem.

Why women need health supplements?

Most women need dietary supplements because the body does not make these nutrients but requires them to function in a healthier way. Many experts suggest that fruits, vegetables, dairy products and healthy fats in impeccable quantities are an indispensable part of a balanced diet. Most women rarely follow diet plans because of their busy schedules and demanding lifestyles.

Dietary health supplements for women

The health supplements which are available for women contain vitamins A, B, C, D and E. Vitamin C is essential to keep the immune system and heart healthy. Vitamin C also lowers blood pressure and raises good cholesterol (HDL) levels within the body, minimizing the risk of heart diseases. Vitamin E also plays a similar role helping to keep the heart strong and healthy. Vitamin E, C and A also lowers the threat of cancer and muscle degeneration as well.

For women health, the supplements are essential as there are several hormonal changes that occur in the body at different ages. The nutritional demand varies at every stage; women who are above 50 years of age should have Vitamin D which helps in the absorption of calcium and protects from osteoporosis. At menopause, women may be told by their doctors to take Vitamin E and B12.

Dietary supplements for women may also comprise organic iron. Many women normally suffer from iron deficiency called anemia and require iron to build red blood cells.

Nowadays in the market there are different health supplements available for both men and women owing to their different requirements and their lifestyles. Poor diets and stress are the reasons for health problems like obesity, breast cancer, premenstrual syndrome, infertility, various skin ailments and problems. Pregnancy and menopause also cause hormonal changes within the body and can be quite stressful too.

Women should include calcium and magnesium in their diets to reduce premenstrual syndrome. The women suffering from premenstrual syndrome should incorporate Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, choline, taurine and herbs like licorice root, dong quai root and peony root. Essential fatty acids are also advantageous to women suffering from this syndrome.

It is very challenging to get adequate nutrients to fight disease and deficiencies. Health supplements can try to fulfill the body’s requirements for vitamins and minerals to help in overcome deficiencies but a balanced diet is must.

Health supplements should only be consumed with prior consent of your doctor who can advise what your needs and requirements are to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
